Across the Pacific

Project type

Process-Based Painting, Site-Responsive Art, Installation

Date

2013–2014

Location

Monterey, CA

Across the Pacific is a series of paintings and installations created through collaboration with ocean waves along the Monterey Peninsula. Watercolor pigments were placed on washi and rag paper and moved by the force of the sea, producing flowing lines, subtle color blends, and dripping patterns shaped by chance and natural erosion.
Some works explore color interactions from top to bottom or from opposing sides, evoking the meeting of the Pacific between Japan and the United States, while others reference earthquake fault lines and seismic forces. The inclusion of red introduces a sense of danger and warning, reflecting the artist’s meditation on disaster, memory, and resilience.
The project was presented as part of the artist’s solo exhibition Earth — the Boundless Sky and Sea at Green Chalk Contemporary in 2014. The act of painting itself is documented as performance, emphasizing the artist’s bodily engagement and collaboration with natural forces.
