Mai's Artwork
I create participatory installations as situations for real-life social networking. My artwork transforms the audience to become participants and engage in everyday actions such as cooking, eating, and talking within thoughtfully created community gatherings. The interaction between the installed space and the participants inspires playful and free expressions.
My body acts as a medium, the foundation of interaction during these community gatherings. I have worn clothing made from and physically connected to the tablecloth or picnic blanket on which the resulting stains from food, drink, and wrinkles from the audience’s body movements create a beautiful relic after the live experience.
My art also offers a reflective environment for the participants to gain a sense of freedom, generosity, and hope in everyday life through positive human interactions. These collective actions create an independent yet connected and caring society, no matter how temporary.
